Founded in 1912 as the California Society of Etchers, the organization was founded as a response to the rising interest in printmaking, and the upcoming Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Despite the name, the organization exhibited all print media: etchings, lithographs, serigraphs, woodcuts, and monoprints, reflecting the great excitement of around printmaking of the time. This energy continued as the century progressed – in 1968 the California Society of Etchers merged with the Bay Area Printmakers, to become the organization it is today.
In 2013, the California Society of Printmakers celebrated its centennial anniversary. In its first 100 years, CSP has offered over 170 printmaking exhibitions, as well as workshops, panel discussions, studio visits, and publications. For their 100th Anniversary, they published California Printmakers, 100 Years, 1913-2013. Featuring over 380 illustrations of members’ prints, this book was the 2014 Recipient of the Art Libraries Society of North America’s (ARLIS/NA) Worldwide Books Annual Publication Award. Hard copies of this book have sold out; however, e-book versions are available on the CSP website, www.caprintmakers.com. Copies of the CSP Journal may also be ordered there.
The California Society of Printmakers, now 300 members strong, continues to build on the momentum of their first 100 years, supporting each other and printmaking throughout California and worldwide. Many of these members are featured in the current exhibition at the Piedmont Center for the Arts. This exhibition features work by members following traditional print practices, as well as those working more experimentally, continuing California Society of Printmakers’ tradition of offering dynamic exhibitions of print media.
