Real Vocal String Quartet makes first appearance in Piedmont
Jazz in the Neighborhood will present Real Vocal String Quartet on Thursday, March 29, at the Piedmont Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m. It is the group’s first appearance in Piedmont.
The Quartet has been performing and recording for the last decade as a singing string quartet and string band. This year the group unveils a new lineup and format with founder Irene Sazer and Sumaia Jackson on five-string violins, Helen Newby on cello and Sam Shuhan on string bass.
The group writes and sings original compositions inspired by a multitude of genres, mixing fiddle tunes, jazz tunes, classical lyricism, pop rhythms and world styles.
The concert will feature a sneak preview of pieces created under the auspices of a grant received from the Gerbode Special Award in the Arts, and includes eight new pieces that are collaborations with artists from eight of San Francisco’s sister cities.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 on the day of the concert and $5 student rush.
