Love’s Sorrow, Love’s Joy

Friday, November 1 at 7:30 PM

The Chamber Music Society of San Francisco will perform a concert at the Piedmont Center for the Arts on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. Titled Love’s Sorrow, Love’s Joy, founding members Natasha Makhijani, Jory Fankuchen, Clio Tilton and Samsun van Loon, joined by guest artist, pianist Stephen Prutsman, will perform Schumann’s String Quartet in A Major, op. 41 no. 3, and the Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor, op. 34

Chamber Music Society brings world-class chamber music with a flair for storytelling to settings that reach far beyond the concert hall. This is the story of two men, a mentor and a pupil, friends whose love for the same woman inspired some of music’s greatest creations.

Robert Schumann’s third string quartet is a joyful testament to his love for his wife, Clara. Brahms’ piano quintet, on the other hand, overwhelms us with its fiery desperation, a longing and sorrow for the same woman - a love that would never come to fruition.

Founded in the spring of 2013 by Makhijani, Fankuchen, Tilton and van Loon, the Chamber Music Society of San Francisco was born out of a collective desire to perform the great chamber music repertoire.  Dedicated to bringing these masterworks to diverse audiences, CMS of SF is passionate about concertizing in intimate settings, creating close connections between performers and listeners, and cultivating a relationship between music and audiences that extends far beyond the perimeter of the concert hall.

Guest artist Stephen Prutsman has been described as one of the most innovative musicians of his time. Moving easily from classical to jazz to world music styles as a pianist, composer and conductor, Prutsman continues to explore and seek common ground and relationships in the music of all cultures and languages.
