Thursday, March 16 at 7pm

The Debbie Poryes Trio – jazz pianist Debbie Poryes, bassist Peter Barshay and drummer David Rokeach – will perform for the first time at the Piedmont Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. Their concert is the second in a series of four Jazz in the Neighborhood concerts this Spring at the Center.

A Piedmont resident, Poryes lived, studied and performed for several years in the Netherlands, including positions teaching jazz at conservatories in Hilversum and Arnhem. She also toured Europe, performing at clubs and in festivals in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, England and France. While abroad, she worked as an accompanist and arranger for numerous singers. She returned to the U.S. in 1990 to get married and to raise her daughter.
Since 2007 she has recorded and released three CDs. In addition to concerts with her trio, Debbie plays Wednesdays and Saturdays at Pican Restaurant in downtown Oakland, has a full-time private teaching practice and runs jazz trio classes at the Jazzschool in Berkeley. She has also been a member of the faculty at the Stanford Jazz Workshop for that last five years.  

Both Barshay and Rokeach have decades of experience playing with musicians around the world. Rokeach has played with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and covered the Jersey Boys chair. He is a drummer in demand in the Bay Area. Barshay lived many years in New York, establishing a strong reputation on the jazz scene. He played with Kenny Barron, Shirley Horn and Freddie Hubbard.
