VoiLàViola, a trio of violist Justin Ouellet, pianist Karen Rosenak and pianist-composer Derek Sup will perform a concert at the Piedmont Center for the Arts at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 28.
The concert is part of a new series of concerts exploring time-honored and lesser-known works for viola as well as newly commissioned works. Conceived and curated by Bay Area violist Justin Ouellet, VoiLàViola aims to cultivate an awareness and appreciation of the viola as a solo instrument while revealing the breadth of repertoire composed for this occasionally overlooked member of the string family.
Music being performed includes Bach’s Suite No.1 for solo cello, Gabriel Fauré’s Mélodies, Fratres for viola and piano by Arvo Pärt, the First Movement of William Walton’s Concerto for Viola; Richard Wagner’s Romance from “In das album Der Fürstin Metternich”, Robert Schumann’s Märchenbilder, Op. 113 and York Bowen’s Phantasy Op. 54. The afternoon concert includes a world premiere written and performed by Derek Sup.
A reception in the back gallery will follow the concert.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Free admission for students 18 and under with school ID's.
