New Dimensions in Art

This May The Piedmont Center for the Arts is offering a new art exhibit featuring local artists Sallie Inglis Sadler and Robert C. Davidson. The emphasis of their exhibit is captured in the title, “Oil & Water.” The show alternately has Sallie’s oil paintings and Robert’s watercolors intermingling in colorful patterns of landscapes, flowers and places. While very different in content, style, and coloration, both artists have created new dimensions in water and oil paintings.

Both of them have made major third age transitions from professional careers to artists. Sallie was a clinical psychologist for the past 30 years. She was Chief of Psychological Services for the US Navy and Coast Guard until the Alameda base closed; then she became a senior clinician in psychiatry for San Francisco Kaiser Permanente. During this career she was highly recognized in various formats, including Whose Who in America. At the peak of this career she was moved to express her creative talent in an entirely different way. Sallie branched into oil painting 10 years ago and brings her professional background into her work in several ways – through her use of color and subject matter and in a quality of mystery and depth seen in many of her paintings. Several of her pieces have been featured in the Maine State Art Gallery, where she resides 4 months of the year.

Robert has been an architect based in the Rockridge area of Oakland for the past 40 years. His private practice included designing houses and offices, retail, educational, and a variety of facilities for religious organizations. This work emanated from his office, Davidson + Seals Architects. Robert’s interest in art came early in his life. His understanding of the relationship of art in architecture has enabled his current transition from architecture back to art. He started developing his watercolor interests in the year 2000 at a point when his office became totally computerized. Robert needed an additional outlet for the hand/eye/mind collaboration of creative expression. He improved his brush skills through the taking of studio classes, workshops, involvement with critique groups and being a member of the California Watercolor Association (CWA). He refers to his current body of work as “fractured realism” which he sees as a reflection of a way to view nature architecturally in terms of its structural character. He has also turned to a bold color palette to exaggerate that realism and to stimulate the experience of familiar places for the viewer. His work has been jury-selected for exhibitions in local, state and national California Watercolor Association shows in California.

This exhibit will be shown at the Piedmont Center for the Arts from April 26 through May 26. The Center is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 3:00pm. An Artists’ Reception for the public will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 4:30pm to 7:00pm.

Robert Davidson

As an architect in private practice for over forty

years Mr. Davidson designed houses, offices,

retail and educational structures, and facilities

for religious organizations.

He started developing his watercolor interests a

dozen years ago, when his office became

computer design and drafting proficient and

retired his working pencil. Robert needed an

additional outlet for the hand/eye/mind

collaboration of creative expression and turned

to what he calls the “liquid” arts.

His early interest in art and his grasp of the role

of art in architecture enabled his transition from

successful architect to working artist. Studio

classes, workshops, and involvement with

critique groups all improved his brush skills.

He became a member of the California

Watercolor Association and has had work jury

selected by them for numerous Local, State and

National exhibits.

Robert refers to his current body of work as

“fractured realism,” a way of viewing nature

architecturally in terms of its structural

Piedmont Center for the Arts (PCA) will host five local artists during the two weekends of ProArts East Bay Open Studios, which kicks off with a reception Friday, May 31, 2013, 5:30-8:00 pm.

For the second year in a row, PCA will put Piedmont on the Pro Arts group studio map, connecting our community to the massive East Bay art event. For nearly forty years, Pro Arts has produced East Bay Open Studios, the largest art event of the East Bay, which brings some 60,000 arts patrons from all over the Bay Area directly to the artists.

All five artists participating at PCA live and do their studio work in Piedmont:

Bonnie Bonner’s botanical watercolors (www.BonniesBotanicalArt.com ) are a combination of scientific accuracy and the creativity of fine art, which was first explored during the sixteenth century. Ms. Bonner’s interest in this realistic art form grew out of her environmental awareness and an appreciation of the natural world.

Teacher and painter Larraine Seiden (www.larraineseiden.com) uses encaustic paint, collage, and fabric to explore moments of transcendence in her Passagesseries. The abstract paintings are etched by repetitive gestures that echo traditional stitch work, marking time in the wax paint.

Suzie Skugstad is a beloved Wildwood art teacher and artist who draws inspiration from the beauty of nature, her students' art, and her mind's eye. Her website can be seen at www.suzieskugstad.com.

Havens art teacher and artist Karen Stanton (www.karenstantonart.com) works with multimedia collage and acrylic paint on paper and wood. She collects her materials from all over the world. Look closely at her paintings and you may see scraps from a French math book, a Spanish novel, a Moroccan tea wrapper, a Turkish map, or a Japanese Go book.

Artist Lorna Strotz paints in encaustic (beeswax) and watercolor. Both realism and abstraction inform her work, which can be seen at www.strotzart.com.

The Open Studios exhibit will be open the following hours:

Friday May 31, Opening Reception from 5:30 to 8:00

Saturday, June 1, 11-5

Sunday, June 2, 11-3

Friday, June 7, 12-3 (PCA regular hours)

Saturday, June 8, 11-5

Sunday June 9, 11- 5 Children’s Art Activity Day

Children are welcome at any time, but on Sunday, June 9, teacher Karen Stanton will share her wealth of collage materials so kids can get inspired to make and take home an original artwork.

The Piedmont Center for the Arts is honored to have Rene de Guzman, Senior Curator of Art, Oakland Museum of California, selecting works for our first juried art exhibition, entitled Return to Simplicity. The theme is meant to reflect the current emphasis on a return to basics, much like there was during the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century where artists found refuge in using organic materials and handcrafted products.
