Shades of Gray specializes in jazz standards from the 1930’s and 1940’s, as well as contemporary jazz songs. Led by Gray Cathrall on piano, the group includes Piedmont resident Scott Corvin on drums and Joe Evinger on guitar.

Performances by the quartet last year included fund-raising events for the Children’s Support League, East Bay Agency for Children, The Cancer League, George Mark Children’s House, Piedmont Scout Council and benefits for Piedmont schools. Shades also appeared at the Bellevue Club, Wood Tavern, the Townhouse, Miss Pearl’s Jam House, Claremont Hotel, Grand Lake Farmers Market and Claremont Country Club.

About the septet

Eric Oto, originally from El Cerrito and now a resident of Los Angeles, has been actively playing for 12 years. He studied at Colburn School of Performing Arts in downtown Los Angeles, and currently plays with the Pacific Jazz ensemble.

Peter Fetterolf, a regular member of the Piedmont-based JazKatz, has performed with a variety of jazz groups over the last 30 years, and is a member of the Big Band Jazz Ensemble at the Family Club in San Francisco.

Bassist Andy Moyce, also playing with Shades for the first time, also is a longtime member of the music program with the Family Club.

Marina Zubareva has been the lead vocalist with Shades for two years. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2012 with a major in vocal performance.
