Devon Joiner Biography

Canadian pianist Devon Joiner is an active solo and chamber musician whose performances have spanned four continents.  His 2011/12 season has included solo performances across Canada, USA and Tanzania including New York’s Alice Tully Hall and his Carnegie Hall debut playing Beethoven’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta.

Mr. Joiner has won numerous awards in National and International piano competitions including first place at the Knigge National Piano Competition and the Canadian Music Competition, 2nd prize in the Shean National Piano Competition and third prize in the Seattle International Piano Competition.   His win in the Burnaby Clef Concerto Competition resulted in his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Joiner was the youngest finalist in the University of British Columbia Concerto Competition and was chosen to play with the UBC Symphony Orchestra as well as being selected as an Artsway UBC Music Ambassador from 2008-2010 performing in health-care and seniors’ facilities throughout greater Vancouver.

As a chamber musician, Mr. Joiner has collaborated with dancers, strings, winds and brass instruments as well as many vocalists.  He has performed a wide variety of repertoire including the world premiere of Canadian composer Jared Miller’s “Sinfonia 9.0” for 15 players and the US premiere of Nina Young’s work “Kolokol” for two pianos and electronics at the SEAMUS 2011 conference of electro-acoustic music in Miami.

Mr. Joiner has participated in the Banff Piano Master Class 2011, the Morningside Music Bridge summer music programs in Shanghai and Calgary and the National Arts Centre’s 2009 Young Artists programme in Ottawa. During the summer of 2010, Mr. Joiner studied under Andrzej Jasinski and Robert Levin at the Mozarteum in Austria on a scholarship from the Strauss Foundation.  He is honored to be a recipient of awards from the Sylva Gelber Foundation, Koerner Foundation, Hnatyshyn Foundation and the BC Arts Council.

Receiving his Bachelor of Music in 2010 from the University of British Columbia studying under Jane Coop and Robert Silverman, Mr. Joiner recently completed his Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School in New York with Julian Martin.  His teaching experiences have included roles as Juilliard Ear Training Teaching Fellow, Concert Fellow with the Juilliard office of Educational Outreach, and Teaching Artist with the Arusha Arts Initiative who recently completed a five week series of arts empowerment workshops and performances in Tanzania.

Mr. Joiner currently resides in New York City as a freelancing performing artist, teacher and collaborator. This concert represents Mr. Joiner’s West Coast debut in the United States.
