Artist Bio – PICTURA ET POESIS - The sky is always the starting point of my work, while memories, doubt, loss and failure comprise the subject matter. The landscape, with its limitless possibilities, evokes feelings which are important to these paintings yet they don’t necessarily have to be my feelings. I am not interested in the topographical landscape, impressionist landscape or expressionist landscape. Rather, I was motivated by seeing John Constable’s sky studies in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1973. My early education in history, literature, Latin and sports, followed by my subsequent years at the Royal Academy, and finally my move to America, with its vast panorama and culture, are all experiences that have never left me and serve as a source of inspiration. Ralph Reed was born in Sheffield, England and graduated from the Sheffield College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. He received his MFA from Indiana University. Ralph has had 14 solo exhibitions in both Europe and the United States. He and his wife live in Piedmont.
