Beverly Johnson, flute, holds a B.A., M.A. and California Teaching Credential from
California State University East Bay. She has also attended the University of Redlands,
San Francisco Conservatory, Wright State University, and Cincinnati Conservatory
pursuing graduate studies. She has been teaching in the public schools since 1984,
recently retired from Hayward Unified, where she was responsible for vocal and
instrumental music programs in several elementary and middle schools. Beverly is a
well-known free lance flutist throughout the Bay Area, performing with several
orchestras, bands, chamber groups and theater productions. She is a retired Air Force
Band musician, having served for 30 years in active duty Air Force and Reserve Air
Guard bands. Being one of the first women to serve in this career field of the military, it
is also noteworthy that she was also one of the first women to serve as First Sergeant and
later the Superintendent of a military band. Beverly is very involved in the Hayward La
Honda Music Camp, where she teaches band, flute technique, chamber music and music
theory, as well as serving as the director of the junior high camp. Past professional
orchestra experience includes Principal flute with the Colorado Springs Symphony and
Opera Company, Denver Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, San Gabriel Symphony,
Castro Valley Chamber Symphony, Ohlone Symphony, and Glendale Symphony. Ms.
Johnson has been teaching at Chabot College since 2005 and her classes include Applied
Flute and Community Concert Band.


Bruce Haines, piano, Mr. Haines has been playing piano and working in musicals and
opera for 51 years. He taught in public schools in four different states for 26 years. Mr.
Haines also worked briefly in television and film - "Murder, She Wrote" and "Stand By
Me, " directed by Rob Reiner. During the 60's Mr. Haines worked in flims made by Andy
Warhol and helped organize and run light shows for Lou Reed and The Velvet
Underground at the Fillmore Auditorium. He worked for Eugene Opera for 8 years in
Oregon, where he completed his M.Ed. at the University of Oregon.
Mr. Haines has been working in local Bay Area theaters since 1990 and is currently the
pianist for the Festival Opera Chorus in Walnut Creek. He is recently retired from
teaching vocal and instrumental music in the Hayward schools, but keeps reasonably
busy teaching piano and strings at the Conservatory or Vocal/Instrumental Arts (COVA),
a charter school in Oakland.
